Day 88 – A Brother Lawrence Commitment
Resolutions often fade. To overcome this, some suggest the 21/90 rule.
You commit yourself to some goal or pattern for 21 straight days to form a habit. Then you continue doing it for another 90 days to make it a lifestyle. Three weeks plus ninety days starts with a resolution.
I followed a similar strategy when I was young believer. I was challenged to read the Bible and pray for at least seven minutes every day. I started with that commitment for 7 days. After 7 days of success, I made another commitment for 30 days. After 30 days of success, I made another commitment for 365 days.
It worked! Reading the Bible and praying for at least seven minutes every day became part of my lifestyle.
Let me challenge you to make a Brother Lawrence Commitment. Here’s mine.
In reflecting on this journey with Brother Lawrence and The Practice of the Presence of God, I resolve to live in fellowship with God, continuous and unbroken, from now, through the rest of my life, and right on into heaven:
• To think about God and his attributes. To see God in all things. To talk with God, even in short prayers, throughout the day. To nurture an awareness of God in the world around me.
• To seek to do everything for God, before God, and in God. To acknowledge that Christ is in me, living his life through me. To affirm the Holy Spirit is upon me.
• In the quiet moments of the day to allow my soul to settle down upon God and the Holy Spirit to settle down upon me, so that during the busy moments of the day I can discover God is with me, Christ is in me, the Holy Spirit surrounds me.
• When I wake up in the morning to draw near to God. Throughout the day to look upward to God and breathe a prayer heavenward. At any pause during the day to take a quick glance and know that God is there. When I go to bed at night to reflect on his nearness throughout the day.
When I follow my own commitment imperfectly, like Brother Lawrence, I will go easy on myself and just start again.
God is at work in me. He loves being with me. He likes me. His desire is for me. I want to enjoy intimate fellowship with God, continuous and unbroken, all day, every day.
Action Step: Make a Brother Lawrence Commitment.
This is God’s Word for you today,
